Benjamin Sangwa.

Engineer by training, builder by practice, and educator by intent. I hold a BEng from Loughborough University and two master's degrees — an MSc in Cyber Security and an MSc in Big Data & Machine Learning — and undertook doctoral research in Cognitive AI. I work as a full-stack software developer and founder shipping AI products, web platforms, and systems that have to perform under real pressure, and I bring that into lecture halls and workshops to help students and institutions across Africa get ready for AI with skill, not hype.

2× MSc Cyber Security and Big Data & Machine Learning — plus a BEng and doctoral research
1M+ Registered users on a platform I helped build and launch
10+ Production builds: web, AI, data, and backend systems

Education & Qualifications

Engineering training that shapes how I think and teach.

My academic path runs from engineering fundamentals into security, data, and the science of intelligent systems — an unusually direct line to the AI work I teach today. It gave me systems thinking, rigour under constraints, and the habit of turning abstract ideas into things that actually work.

Undergraduate
BEng

BEng (Hons), Engineering

Loughborough University, United Kingdom

My foundation: mathematics, modelling, and disciplined problem solving. Engineering teaches you to reason quantitatively, work from first principles, and deliver under real constraints — the same mindset I now apply to software and to teaching.

Postgraduate
MSc

MSc, Cyber Security

Master of Science

A specialist master's in securing systems and data — threat models, secure design, and the realities of protecting software in production. It sharpens how I teach responsible, safe technology use.

Postgraduate
MSc

MSc, Big Data & Machine Learning

Master of Science

Formal grounding in data at scale and the mathematics of machine learning — the academic backbone behind the practical AI sessions I run. It connects theory to the tools students actually use.

Doctoral
PhD research

Doctoral research, Cognitive AI

PhD programme — commenced, not completed

Research into cognitive AI: how machines represent, reason, and learn in ways inspired by the mind. Even unfinished, it gave me a deep, current view of where AI is genuinely heading — context I bring directly into the room.

Ongoing
Self-directed

Applied software & AI practice

Independent study and production work

Continuous, hands-on study of modern software engineering and applied AI: building with React, Next.js, Node.js, Three.js / WebGL, APIs, and AI tooling. I learn by shipping, then distil what works into material people can actually use.

Professional Experience

Work that proves the theory — not just slides about it.

I have spent years building and shipping real software: client products, startup platforms, and public-facing systems that had to launch on time and stay up under load. This is the experience I bring into the room as live, inspectable examples.

Full-Stack Creative Developer & Founder

Independent · benjaminsangwa.com

Designing and shipping AI products, data visualisations, and API-driven platforms end to end — from backend systems to immersive front-end interfaces. I also operate as a fractional CTO, helping founders translate ideas into working, maintainable software.

2026
Launch

Lead Builder — MNR Platform, Phase 1

High-pressure delivery engagement

Built and launched Phase 1 under an aggressive deadline, delivering registration, campaign flows, and operational tooling. Through focused scope, rapid iteration, and daily performance tuning, the platform absorbed heavy demand and crossed 1,000,000+ registered people within a short delivery window.

2021 – 2023
Practice

Creative Technologist

Interactive & campaign work

Delivered interactive campaign sites and e-commerce experiences that bridged design systems with performant front-end architecture — story-led commerce, cinematic motion, and immersive WebGL experiences built to convert and to last.

Teaching & Guest Lectures

Clear theory, live examples, then hands-on application.

I teach through working artifacts: real codebases, AI workflows, product decisions, trade-offs, and honest accounts of what failed. Students should leave a session with language they can use, examples they understand, and a concrete next step they can take on their own.

AI as a practical tool

Using AI responsibly for research, coding, writing, prototyping, and automation — without outsourcing judgment or critical thinking.

AI literacy

From idea to shipped product

Scoping, choosing tools, building fast, gathering feedback, and improving under real constraints — the full path from concept to production.

Product building

Software engineering in practice

Backend systems, APIs, front-end interfaces, data flows, deployment, and the habits that separate demos from software people can rely on.

Engineering

Digital entrepreneurship

How technical people spot opportunities, test demand, communicate value, and build useful ventures in African and global markets.

Innovation

AI readiness & adoption

Using adoption and penetration data to understand who has access to AI, who is using it well, and where teaching has the strongest impact.

AI readiness

Portfolio & career readiness

Helping students present projects, write about their work, use version control, and build credible public proof of their skills.

Careers

Formats I offer

60–90 minute guest lectures, half-day workshops, AI readiness sessions, project critique clinics, AI tooling labs, and startup / product clinics — adaptable to a single class or a full cohort.

How students engage

Participants work through real examples, ask direct questions, review live builds, and learn to explain technical decisions clearly. The goal is confidence and capability, not performance.

Achievements

Outcomes I can stand behind and explain.

These are the moments where engineering discipline met real delivery pressure. Each one doubles as teaching material — a real story with real constraints, decisions, and consequences.

01

Crossed 1,000,000+ registrations on a platform I helped build

Delivered MNR Phase 1 under an aggressive deadline and tuned it to absorb high demand without breaking.

02

A BEng, two master's degrees, and doctoral research

A BEng from Loughborough University, an MSc in Cyber Security, an MSc in Big Data & Machine Learning, and doctoral research in Cognitive AI.

03

Built a self-publishing personal platform from scratch

An API-controlled website with owner editing, an AI assistant, and reader-first content pages — the very site you are reading now.

04

Shipped public AI & data-storytelling tools

Live interactive visuals on AI adoption and automation risk, designed to turn complex data into clear, discussable insight.

Core Skills & Stack

The toolkit I teach from and build with.

Fluency across the full stack means I can show, not just tell — wiring up a backend, building an interface, calling an AI model, and shipping it live, all in front of a class.

Guest Lectures & Teaching

Available to lecture, run workshops, and mentor students.

I want to give back to the continent that has given me so much by helping students and institutions across Africa prepare for AI with practical skill, honest context, and a clear view of where opportunity is growing. If you are looking for a guest lecturer or workshop facilitator who builds the real thing, let's talk.
