Computers are heaters that think
Almost all the electricity a computer uses turns into heat. One AI chip runs hotter than a kitchen hob — and a data center holds hundreds of thousands of them.

Water is a heat sponge
Water soaks up about 4× more heat than air. It's why you cool a burn under the tap instead of blowing on it — and why big computers are water-cooled, like a car engine.

The building sweats
Warm water is sprayed inside a cooling tower and meets fresh air. Some of it turns to steam and floats away — and that disappearing act is what cools the rest. Just like sweat cooling your skin.

"It evaporates, so it rains right back"
True — steam does become rain. But clouds drift. The rain often falls hundreds of kilometers away, over mountains or the sea. The river that fed the data center just stays lower.

Not all water is the same water
Two kinds go in, one stays sealed inside, and one goes out. The controversy is mostly about the first one — it's the same water your kitchen tap uses.

"Just clean it and reuse it"
Every loop, the leftover water gets saltier — and pulling salt out of water is slow, power-hungry and expensive (it's basically desalination). So most of it goes down the drain instead.

Power stations boil water to make electricity — their steam clouds are water disappearing too. Even a "waterless" data center drinks through its power cable.
